Coptis chinensis is a dry rhizome and fibrous root of the genus Cinnamomum, a genus perennial herb of the Ranunculaceae family. The rhizomes are horizontal and consist of several stems and rhizomes on the ground. Stems are round-eyed and have a diameter of about 3-6 mm. Some with a piece of residual stems with scale leaf wrapped around. The rhizomes are about 1 to 1.5 cm long and about 2 to 5 cm long. The skin is tan and solid. The section is yellowish green. The fibrous roots on both sides and underside of the rhizome are shaped like a horse's tail, about 10 to 25 centimeters in length, and about 1 to 1.5 millimeters in diameter. They are broken and crooked, brown on the surface, and flaky and detached. Yellowish xylem leaks from the detachment, such as yellow hair. Gas slightly, bitter.
