Berberine has an inhibitory effect on both acute and chronic inflammation. Other components of Coptis, such as jatrorrhizine and coptisine, also have significant anti-inflammatory effects. The anti-inflammatory effects of berberine are related to some aspects of its inhibition of the inflammatory process. Berberine can significantly inhibit chemokine ZAP-induced neutrophil chemotaxis, inhibit zymosan-induced chemiluminescent reaction of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and produce hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide-induced chemiluminescence in leukocyte lines. There is a significant inhibitory effect; intravenous infusion of berberine can significantly reduce the content of prostaglandin E2 in rat inflammatory tissue. Berberine can also significantly reduce the activity of phospholipase A2 in neutrophils and reduce the production of inflammatory mediators.
